What is Salsa? It all depends on who’s talking. Musicians say it’s a hybrid of Latin American, North American, European and African rhythms and melodies. Dancers note that it blends the sultry flirtatiousness of Afro-Latin dance styles (largely from Cuba and Puerto Rico) with the theatrics and speed of lindy hop and hustle. Lise Waxer, musicologist (author of Situating Salsa) proposes for the listening audience
“…following the complex polyrhythmic conversations of salsa performance can be as exhilarating as getting down on the dance floor. For many of it new audiences (primarily Anglos), salsa is also a gateway to the cultural Other, a fascinating and often exotic world where new selves find liberation cultural strictures”
